I was able to get separate bands of color. On leaf sample 1, I got a green band, and than higher up a yellow band. On sample 2, I got green, then a brown/yellow, then yellow. On sample 3 I got yellow and then more yellow. In this experiment we use alcohol, instead of water because the dyes in leaves are not very soluble in water. The yellow (xanthophyll) travels furthest because it is the most soluble, while the green (chlorophyll) travels slower because it is less soluble.
